SKY CROP - Renovation project of a coastal tower in Puglia

SKY CROP wants to save the iconic shape of the tower ruin and safeguard the dune with its Mediterranean bush, while providing a space for visitors to experience and enjoy the setting of the vast sea and the infinite sky. The existing building is object  of a recovery and consolidation intervention aimed at removing the phenomena of deterioration and incongruous elements. The project concept is characterized by three elements: the platform, the box and the long skylight. 1. A circular platform in corten steel and wood, which limits the action of the waves while preserving the tower from further degradation phenomena, is supported by a system of posts planted in the sand which follow the orography without altering the coastal dune and the vegetation spontaneous. This large circle gravitates around the tower, and like a podium, as well as framing it territorially, it becomes a public place of aggregation and relationship with the surrounding environment. A slight curved ramp allows access from the beach. A bleacher facing the sea facilitates bathing and becomes a seat for looking at the horizon.  2. A box with sides of approximately 5.30 m and a height of 4.70 m, made of corten steel sheet stiffened by a rib of the same material, is inserted on the intermediate level. The choice of Corten was determined both for the characteristics of resistance to salt air and for the possibility of dry assembly. It is in fact assembled in the workshop and then lowered with a crane onto the existing concrete slab. It is made up of 4 lateral faces with holes in correspondence with the pre-existing openings, the lower face which serves as the floor on the intermediate level and an upper face which creates the third level. Here a terrace allows you to contemplate the horizon evoking the original function of the tower, visually and ideally reconnecting with the other towers that were part of the coastal defense system.  3. A long truncated pyramidal skylight crosses the box vertically, visually connecting the sky with the ground floor. The projection of light coming from above, with the presence of a new corten steel staircase, invites the ascent, and the upper floors are reached through the pre-existing external path.  All elements can be disassembled and reassembled, used individually or together with just one of these, as repeatable elements and adaptable to other towers.
